With the title “Passion”, I feel like I’m a vampire on the verge of committing a bunch of heinous crimes against my ex-lover. But not before launching into a soulful monologue first.
If you didn’t catch that Buffy The Vampire Slayer reference well then, shame on you. It’s one of the best shows ever and in my opinion, quintessential for young girls/women. Check it out.
Anyways, passion.
I was always convinced that I never had any. I like a lot of things. I’m good at–hopefully a lot of things. But I never had that intense, burning hunger for something like we’re led to believe passion is.
See: Me still half-not knowing what to do with my life. Sort of. I’m learning to re-define passion.
I obviously like writing. And I don’t think it’d be fair to say I never had passion for it. I might have lost it a little. But alas, here I am.
Passion shouldn’t be equated to careers only. Yes, by all means, it’s great to have a passion you can make a job out of. But there’s so much more to it.
You can have a passion for people in your life. I’d by lying if I said I didn’t want passionate love in my life. I’m a romantic at heart, sue me.
But more than that, you can have passion for the things you love. You can be passionate for a sports team, a TV show, a movie, a band; the possibilities are endless.
That’s me. For as long as I can remember, I’ve always been passionately obsessed with something. I think it’s absolutely remarkable. I think we lose sight of it because we are made to feel that putting so much love and energy into something not beneficial to us is wrong.
Well, I call bullshit.
I’ve dealt with (and still do) people thinking I’m crazy for being so deep into certain things. If it’s not something self-serving like a job, it’s easily written off. Unless it’s something widely acceptable like men and their love of sports.
That is a completely different rant that I could launch into for hours but I digress.
It’s the way we put so much love and energy and time into something, whatever it may be, that makes us feel alive. It’s passion. It’s pure, unadulterated passion. It’s an amazing feeling to have.
Some may call it obsession with things that don’t matter. I say–fuck them and their closed-off minds. If you have something that makes you feel happy and alive, then how could it be wrong or silly?
Having a passion for making music might lead you to a paying job but having a passion for listening to music fills a part of your soul. The same ca be said for writing, reading, watching movies, playing video games, cooking, etc.
I guess what I’m trying to say is that if you have passion in your life, whether it’s career-fulfilling or just a hobby, it’s an amazing thing.
We define what passion is and what things mean to us. And no one should be allowed to say anything about it.
Stay passionate, be happy!!
Great post! We all have some kind of passion, maybe more than one lol but it can be hard sometimes in this society to be passionate about certain things, but you bring a great perspective to it!
